Business Licensing

All businesses with gross receipts over $4,000 must purchase a business license before conducting business in the Isle of Wight County. Generally, the license fee is based on gross receipts and will vary according to the type of business. To determine the license fee, go to our Forms Section on this website and select the “Business License Application” form. This form contains the rate schedule for Business Licenses. If you need assistance please contact our Business Tax Division at 757-365-6321. The license expires December 31 and must be renewed by March 1 of the following year to avoid a 10% penalty.

When starting a business in Isle of Wight, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue so that your business may be correctly classified. A majority of the license taxes are based on gross receipts. The tax rate will vary according to the business category. You must file an application and pay the business license tax prior to your first day of business.

Depending on your business, there may be additional requirements to meet before your first day of business. Before the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office is able to issue a business license, you must contact the Department of Central Permitting at 757-365-6211 or email planreview@iwus.net to determine if a Zoning Certificate will be required.  If you plan to operate your business under anything other than your legal first and last name, an assumed name form must be obtained through the State Corporation Commission (scc.virginia.com) effective January 1, 2020.  In addition to the business license tax, you  may be required to pay other taxes prior to the issuance of your license.
