Board of Zoning Appeals

Isle of Wight County adopted the first Zoning Ordinance in 1970 along with the creation of the Board of Zoning Appeals. The purpose of the Zoning Ordinance is to implement the Isle of Wight County Comprehensive Plan and promote and protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the present and future residences and businesses of the county.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is the body established under state law to provide relief in special cases where the strict application of the Zoning Ordinance would produce undue hardship to a landowner. The Board’s function is to hear and decide upon the interpretation and the application of the provisions of the Zoning Ordinance in these cases. Prior to hearing on an application, public notice is required in the local newspapers and notification is sent to the adjacent property owners regarding the request. When the Board determines that circumstances warrant favorable consideration, specific requirements of the Zoning Ordinance are relaxed.

BZA meetings are held the first Monday of the month at 6:00 pm in the Robert C. Claud, Sr. Board Room at the County Courthouse Complex on an on-call basis.
