Installing a Sign

Signs obstruct views, distract motorists, displace alternative uses for land, and pose other problems that legitimately call for regulation. The county regulates the size, color, illumination, movement, materials, location, height and condition of all signs placed on private property for exterior observation, thus ensuring the protection of property values, the character of neighborhoods, the creation of a convenient, attractive and harmonious community, the protection against destruction of or encroachment upon historic areas, to encourage the effective use of signs as a means of visual communication in the county, to maintain and enhance the county’s ability to attract sources of economic development and growth, to improve pedestrian and traffic safety, and to enable the fair and consistent enforcement of these sign restrictions. This allows for adequate communication through signage while encouraging aesthetic quality in the design, location, size and purpose of signs in the community.

  • A sign will require a zoning and building permit

Items needed for review

  • Central Permitting application
    • Or approved town zoning permit
  • Site plan or aerial photograph showing the location of the proposed sign
    • Distances to all property lines
  • Sign plan to include colors, size and lighting
  • General Permit application
    • 2 complete sets of construction drawings
      • Or 1 single PDF if emailing
  • Once all items are submitted we will place you into a 10 business day review. Once site plan and construction plans are approved we will notify you and request payment.
      • The zoning permit is a flat fee of $35.00.
      • The building permit fee is $90.95 per sign
  • Electrical is permitted separately

Sign Application Packet
You can submit applications and plans via email to planreview@iwus.net (Plans must be in one complete PDF file to submit digitally) or they can be submitted in our office between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.

Our address is 17140 Monument Circle, Suite 100, Isle of Wight VA 23397. We are in Building B which is the 2-story brick building across from the Historic Boykins Tavern. Our office is on the right, through the double glass doors.
