Installing a Pool or Hot Tub
A hot tub, above pool and inground pool all require both zoning and building permits.
Items needed for review:
- Central Permit application
- or approved Town zoning application
- Site plan or aerial photograph showing the proposed pool/hot tub:
- Distances to all property lines
- Distance to well and/or septic tank if applicable
- Location of pool pump/equipment (must be a minimum of 3′ away from the pool barrier)
- Location of fence (a pool fence is required if the pool is in-ground, or if above ground pool is less than 48 inches high)
- A hot tub is required to have a lockable lid
- Location of pool decking
- Site improvement form if private water or septic is on property
- General Permit application for the pool fence (must be secured before pool permit will be issued)
- Pool fence affidavit signed and notarized
- General Permit application
- complete sets of construction drawings (if applicable)
- Or 1 complete PDF file, if emailing
- complete sets of construction drawings (if applicable)
- Once all items are submitted we will place you into a 10 business day review.
- Once site plan and construction plans are approved we will notify you and request payment.
- The zoning permit is a flat fee of $35.00.
- The building permit is a minimum fee of $90.95.
- An inspection checklist will be provided and reviewed with you at the time of permit issuance.
- All trades are permitted separately

Pool/Hot Tub Application PacketYou can submit applications and plans via email to planreview@iwus.net (Plans must be in one complete PDF file to submit digitally) or they can be submitted in our office between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.
Our address is 17140 Monument Circle, Suite 100, Isle of Wight VA 23397. We are in Building B which is the 2-story brick building across from the Historic Boykins Tavern. Our office is on the right, through the double glass doors.
