Ivy Hill Cemetery

Ivy Hill Cemetery was created in 1887 as a private cemetery to serve the residents of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County. The land was originally part of the T.B. Wright farm until it was laid out as a cemetery along the slopes of land overlooking the Pagan River. It has been the burial ground for many of the area’s prominent citizens.

The cemetery is an example of the rural cemetery movement which is characterized by a landscape design that follows the natural contours of the land and includes wooded areas and rolling hills. It is also sited well away from urban development. It is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
