Business Licensing: Additional Information

ZONING PERMIT
Isle of Wight County code regulates where a business may operate. The Commissioner of the Revenue’s office will issue a business license once the Department of Planning and Zoning has issued a zoning permit.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE LICENSE
The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control oversees the importation and sale of alcoholic beverages, excluding beer and wine. Licenses are issued for the manufacture of liquors, wholesale of beer and wine, and the retail sale of spirits by the drink. STATE CONTRACTORS LICENSE
All contractors must register with the State Board of Contractors. A CLASS A Contractors License is required for contractors who bid on or undertake single jobs of $70,000 or more, or a total volume of $500,000 or more within a 12 month period. A CLASS B Contractors License is required for contractors who bid on or undertake single jobs more than $7,500 but less than $70,000. A CLASS C Contractors License is required for contractors who bid on or undertake single jobs more than $1,000 but less than $7,500. Contact the Board of Contractors by phone, 804.367.8511, or mail:

HEALTH DEPARTMENT INSPECTIONS
Barber shops, beauty salons and restaurants must be inspected by the Health Department. Contact the Health Department at 757.357.4177 for more information.

WORKERS’ COMPENSATION
Employers with three or more regular employees are required to provide workers’ compensation insurance at no cost to the employee. REGISTER  A CORPORATION, PARTNERSHIP, OR TRADE NAME
All corporations (foreign and domestic,) limited partnerships, and limited liability corporations conducting business in Virginia must register with the Virginia State Corporation Commission. To become incorporated in Virginia, file your articles of incorporation and amendments with the State Corporation Commission.
