IW.Alert Notification System
Get alerted about emergencies and other important community news by signing up for Isle of Wight County’s IWAlert Emergency Notification System. This system enables us to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods.
The IWAlert system will allow you to:
- Choose the locations in Isle of Wight you want to be contacted about – your home, your parent’s home, your workplace, your child’s school or daycare, etc.
- Choose how you would like to be notified: by text message, email cell phone, home phone, work phone, etc. and the order in which you would like us to attempt to notify you.
- Sign up for various weather alerts directly from the National Weather Service and to control when you receive these weather alerts by setting up a quiet period.
An account should be established for each person not by family. It takes just a few minutes to sign up, your information is confidential and you can make changes at any time.
What are locations and why are they important?
IWAlert allows us to make notifications based on geographic location. By entering a location, you identify address points in the county that are important specifically to you. A location of interest to you might be: your home address, your work address, your child's school or day care address, or an address someone that you may be assisting during an emergency, etc. An example of when we might make a notification based on a location would be if we had a chemical spill that required a 1-mile circle around the spill to be evacuated. If you have entered a location that falls within the 1-mile circle, we can send information specifically related to your location about what protective actions you need to take. An additional example would be if we wanted to get a message out to a specific neighborhood - if you've identified a location inside of the circle drawn around that neighborhood, you would receive the IWAlert message.
I'd like to sign up for the National Weather Service weather alerts, but don't want to be contacted in the middle of the night. Can I turn them off overnight (or durung other times)?Yes. One of the IWAlert system enhancements is the ability to opt-in to receive a variety of special weather alerts directly from the National Weather Service (NWS). You can select which weather alerts that you would like to receive from a listing of available options. Additionally, if you desire you can setup a "quiet time". During your identified quiet period, you will not receive NWS messages. However, there is one exception, Isle of Wight has identified Tornado Warnings as so critical to the life safety of our citizens - you will be notified of Tornado Warnings issued for Isle of Wight County regardless of any quiet period you may setup. Please note that if you do not set up a quiet time, IOW County has not control over what time of day or nights NWS alerts may be sent.
What if my phone number or email address changes?
IWAlert is only as good as the information you provide. If your contact information changes, you can log into the IWAlert system and edit your information. If you have problems making changes online, you can contact the Isle of Wight Department of Emergency Services Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm at (757)365-6308 and we can assist you.
I can't remember my user name or password, what do I do?
On the IWAlert login screen there are links for "forgot my username" and "forgot my password" if you click on the link that applies to your situation, the system will walk you through how to retrieve your user name or password.
Will my contact information be shared with others?
No. The information that you provide will be used only by IWAlert for notification purposes. We will not give or sell your contact or location information to any vendor or other organization.
