How does the County Attorney's Office differ from the Commonwealth Attorney's Office?
The County Attorney’s Office provides counsel and advice in all civil matters to the Board of Supervisors and all boards, commissions, departments, agencies, offices and official of the general County government. In addition, the County Attorney’s Office prosecutes misdemeanor animal control and code enforcement violations. The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office focuses on the prosecution of all criminal and traffic cases occurring within Isle of Wight County. The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office does not investigate criminal offenses. If you feel you are a victim of a crime, please contact the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office. Please go to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for additional information.
If you have a particular concern relating to a zoning violation, please contact the Isle of Wight County Code Enforcement Officer, Ms. Rachel Bass, at (757) 365-6303 to file a complaint.
The Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia with access to existing public records. This access is also provided to newspapers and magazines circulated throughout Virginia, as well as radio and television stations broadcasting in Virginia. There are a few statutory requirements for making a FOIA request, the most important of which is to identify records sought with reasonable specificity. This allows the County to better respond to your requests in a timely manner. Since there really are no stringent requirements on form or format for a request, your request can be made either orally or in writing. In order to properly track requests submitted to the County, it would be helpful for you to submit your request using the County’s FOIA form (hyperlink to that form).
