Isle of Wight County has four Historic Overlay (HO) Districts recognized in it’s Comprehensive Plan and designated in the Zoning Ordinance. Property improvements within these districts are subject to review and approval of the Historic Architectural Review Committee.

St. Luke’s Historic District

The St. Luke’s Historic District is located in the north-eastern section of the County, in the Newport Election district, just south of the Town of Smithfield. It is generally centered around Historic St. Luke’s Church at the intersection of Route 10/258 (Brewer’s Neck Blvd.) and Route 10/32 (Benns Church Blvd).  The County is currently in the process of developing Historic District Guidelines for renovation and development in the district.

Courthouse Historic District

The Courthouse Historic District is located in the center of the County, in the Windsor election district, extending across both sides of Route 258 (Courthouse Highway). It continues to serve as the County seat and administrative center for County functions and contains the historic Boykin’s Tavern Museum.

Fort Boykin Historic District

Fort Boykin is a waterfront Civil War fort, located in the northern section of the County, on the east side of Route 10, in the Hardy election district. It is owned and maintained by the County, through the Division of Historic Resources.

Fort Boykin is currently CLOSED, due to damage by Hurricane Irene. Please check with the Division of Historic Resources for updates and re-opening.

Fort Huger Historic District

For Huger is an interpreted, waterfront Civil War fort, located in the northern section of the County in the Hardy election district. It is owned and maintained by the County, through the Division of Historic Resources.

Fort Huger is currently CLOSED, due to damage by Hurricane Irene. Please check with the Division of Historic Resources for updates and re-opening.
