A Message from Chairman Clark

If you are a new Isle of Wight County resident, Welcome! If not, this medium is dedicated to trying to familiarize all citizens with the elected officials. My belief is that I do a better job in representing my Newport District constituents and all County residents if I have maximum contact with as many citizens as possible.

So that you know a little about me: I am 52 years of age and was raised in Newport News, Virginia. I graduated from Warwick High School in 1973 and Christopher Newport College in 1977 with a B.S. in Government Administration with a specialty in Law Enforcement and Minors in History and Philosophy. I worked 2½ years as a police officer and was a lieutenant at the conclusion of that occupation when I went to law school and graduated from George Mason University in 1982 where I was President of the Student Bar Association. I also passed the Bar that year.

I worked for Diamonstein, Drescher & Kamp for almost a year and the City of Portsmouth Commonwealth Attorney’s Office as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for 2 years. I have been in various private practices since 1985 or so and have had my own sole practitioner office in Portsmouth, Virginia since 1999. I am a trial lawyer and handle personal injury, criminal, traffic and license restoration matters, and I also represent injured railroad workers under the Federal Employer Liability Act (FELA).

My two children are Patrick, age 21, and Ashby, age 25. Patrick is a junior at JMU and Ashby is in law school. I’m a long time member of West Hampton Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia. Through the years, I have been involved in coaching youth sports including Pop Warner Football, Smithfield Recreational Pony League Baseball, Girl’s Fast Pitch Softball and umpiring. I was also the President of the CNU Alumni Board.

Since being elected as Supervisor in 1999, I have served on many regional organizations, like the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, Metro Planning Organization, Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance, Western Tidewater Regional Jail Board and the Suffolk YMCA Board.

Politically, I am Independent since local issues have very little connection with any party line or dogma. I tend to be fiscallyconservative but I try to be environmentally conscious and have a strong belief in quality public education and providing good pay and benefits for all County employees. We are steadily working to make Isle of Wight County a greener community and one that is less dependent on the automobile. Recreation and walkable communities are encouraged. Budget constraints make this and other progressive efforts a challenge.

I strongly believe in open government and the active role of a responsible press in informing the citizenship.

As such, if any citizen needs me, please call my office or County staff and they will connect us. My office telephone number is (757) 399-6868. Please call me and help me make our government work better for all of us.

Stan D. Clark, Chairman
