Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors

Isle of Wight County is governed by the Board of Supervisors, an elected body of five members representing each of the County's five election districts: Carrsville, Hardy, Newport, Smithfield and Windsor.

The Board determines all policies and ordinances that govern the County and appropriates funds for County programs through an annual budget.

The Supervisors are elected to four-year terms that are staggered at two-year intervals. The Board elects its Chairman and Vice-Chairman each year at its organizational meeting in January.


Isle of Wight County Constitutional Officers

Clerk of the Circuit Court
The Clerk of the Circuit Court provides support for Circuit Court Judges and handles administrative matters for the Circuit Court.

The Clerk also has authority to probate wills, grant administration of estates, and appoint guardians. The Clerk is the custodian of the court records and the Clerk’s Office is where deeds are recorded and marriage licenses issued.

The Clerk is elected to an eight-year term.

Commissioner of the Revenue
The Commissioner of the Revenue is responsible for the assessment of all real estate in the County and for the maintenance and retention of accurate property records. The Commissioner’s is also responsible for assessments on all personal property, such as, vehicles, boats, mobile homes, trailers, machinery and equipment.

The Commissioner’s Office assists the public with preparation of state income tax filing; issues and maintains business licenses; coordinates income tax relief for the elderly; and prepares and maintains information for land records.

The Commissioner is elected to a four-year term.

Commonwealth’s Attorney
The Commonwealth's Attorney is responsible for representing the people of Isle of Wight County in prosecuting criminal cases. Cases presented by the Commonwealth's Attorney are tried in the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile Courts.

The Commonwealth Attorney is elected to a four-year term.

Sheriff
The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer for Isle of Wight County and the primary responsibilities of the Sheriff’s Office are: conducting criminal investigations; arresting offenders; serving criminal and civil warrants, providing courthouse and courtroom security; and providing general law enforcement protection.

The Sheriff is elected to a four-year term.

Treasurer
The Treasurer's Office has the responsibility to collect all tax revenues and local fees. The Treasurer also manages the investment of County funds and represents Isle of Wight in all banking activities.

State Representatives

State Senate and House of Delegates
The 1776 Virginia Constitution confirmed our bicameral legislature, which consists of the House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia. The present state Constitution, adopted in 1970, provides that the House of Delegates shall consist of 90 to 100 members and the Senate shall consist of 33 to 40 members. All members of the General Assembly are elected by qualified voters within their respective House and Senate districts. The terms of office are two years for members of the House and four years for members of the Senate.


Federal Representatives

U.S. Senate
The United States Senate is the upper house of the bicameral United States Congress, and, each state is represented by two members. The Senate's membership is therefore based on the equal representation of each state, regardless of population.

Senators serve for six-year terms that are staggered so elections are held for a third of the seats every second year.

U.S. House of Reperesentatives
The United States House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the United States Congress. Each state receives representation in the House proportional to its population but is entitled to at least one representative.

Each representative serves for a two-year term.
