The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) maintains state-owned roads in the County. Other roads are privately maintained. The Town of Smithfield maintains secondary roads within the Town. For all concerns regarding state-owned roads in the County, call VDOT at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
The County receives state funds or matches state funds to pave state-owned gravel roads that qualify as Rural Rustic Roads. A list of roads awaiting rural rustic or pave-in-place treatment is shown here. To learn more about Rural Rustic Roads, see the VDOT Web site.
VDOT will accept older private roads that meet certain criteria. The County maintains a list of private roads whose residents have requested acceptance for state maintenance. For information on getting existing roads into the state maintenance system, see VDOT’s Web Page.
Each year, the County prepares and approves a Six-year Secondary Road Improvement Plan, following a public hearing. Projects contained in the plan must be fully funded. The County locally administers certain projects using state funds channeled through VDOT. For a copy of the current Six-year Plan, call the Engineering Department.
VDOT is seeking to develop a new toll road to extend from the existing U.S. Route 460 near its interchange with Interstate 295 (I-295) in Prince George County to the U.S. Route 58 bypass just south of the existing U.S. Route 460 in the City of Suffolk. The corridor alignment for this project runs south of the existing U.S. Route 460 in Isle of Wight County. For updates on this private-public partnership project, click here.
