When was the last time you tested the smoke alarms in your home? Was it last week? Last month? A year ago?
The 2016 Fire Prevention Week campaign runs from Oct. 9-15. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” It is all about keeping you and your family safe from a fire.
Smoke alarms have become such a common feature of U.S. households that they’re often taken for granted, and are not tested and maintained as frequently as they should be.
Working smoke alarms are a critical fire safety tool that can mean the difference between life and death in a home fire. Smoke alarms can reduce the chances of dying in a home fire by half. NFPA data shows that three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (38%) or no working smoke alarms (21%). Many of these deaths could have been prevented with the proper smoke alarm protection.
