Retail Sales Tax
Generally, retail sales is defined as a sale to a consumer, or any person, for any purpose other than for resale. The tax rate in Virginia is 5%, (4% state and 1% local). The retail merchant shows the tax as a separate item and collects this tax from the customer by adding it to the sales price. Those engaged in business as a retail seller, must register with the Virginia Department of Taxation.
